The U.S. military has deployed ground-based air defenses and counter-drone systems around President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, at the request of the U.S. Secret Service, North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) confirmed on October 23, 2026. Imagery shows U.S. Army AN/TWQ-1 Avenger air defense systems on a floating platform beside the estate and at President Donald J. Trump International Airport.

The deployment comes as Trump returns to Palm Beach under a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) VIP movement notice covering October 30 through November 1, and as U.S. intelligence warns of intensifying Iranian targeting of American officials eight months after Operation Epic Fury, the U.S.-Israeli campaign launched against Iran on February 28, 2026. Neither the commands nor the Secret Service have tied the deployment to a specific threat, and the commands have withheld further details, citing operational security.

Avenger Air Defense Positions at Mar-a-Lago and Trump Airport

Photographs taken between October 15 and October 23 show at least two Humvee-mounted Avengers on a floating platform in the Lake Worth Lagoon off the estate, a third on the estate’s beachfront and at least two more at the airport, roughly three miles to the west.

“These assets add a complementary layer of technology to enhance protection,” NORAD and USNORTHCOM said in a joint statement. The Secret Service, citing a heightened threat environment, confirmed that USNORTHCOM is providing counter-small Unmanned Aircraft System (C-sUAS) Fly-Away Kits for its protective operations.

The operating unit has not been named. After Avengers guarded Trump at his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf club in August 2026, NORAD said Avengers deployed to support the Secret Service are operated by the 263rd Army Air and Missile Defense Command, a South Carolina National Guard headquarters that certifies units for the National Capital Region air defense mission. Imagery from Bedminster on August 9 also showed an AN/MPQ-64 Sentinel radar; none has been publicly identified in Palm Beach.

Stinger Proximity Fuzes and Fly-Away Kits Target Small Drones

Built by Boeing and delivered since 1988, the Avenger is a short-range air defense (SHORAD) system that mounts a gyro-stabilized turret on a Humvee chassis, carrying two Standard Vehicle Mounted Launchers with four ready-to-fire FIM-92 Stinger missiles each and an M3P .50-caliber machine gun for close-in engagements. The gunner acquires targets through an optical sight or the AN/VLR-1 forward-looking infrared sensor, while an eye-safe CO2 laser rangefinder, an automatic video tracker and AN/PPX-3B identification friend or foe equipment feed the fire control computer. A remote control unit allows engagements from 50 meters away. Publicly available specifications indicate a Stinger engagement range of roughly 4.8 kilometers, more than twice the radius of the restricted zone over the estate.

Against drones, the relevant round is the FIM-92J. The Army retrofitted Block I Stingers with a proximity fuze that detonates the warhead on a near miss rather than requiring a direct hit, a change tested at Eglin Air Force Base in 2018 to defeat small and medium unmanned aircraft. The Army has not said which variant equips the Palm Beach fire units.

The Fly-Away Kit covers the low end of the threat spectrum, where a heat-seeking missile is a poor match for a commercial quadcopter. The configuration USNORTHCOM certified in late 2025, developed by Anduril, combines a mobile sensor trailer with 360-degree thermal and radar coverage, Pulsar electronic warfare modules for radio frequency detection and jamming, Anvil interceptor drones and Lattice command-and-control software. In March, the command disclosed that a kit had jammed drones over a strategic U.S. installation in the opening hours of Epic Fury. USNORTHCOM has not disclosed what it sent to Palm Beach.

Iranian Plots and Airspace Violations Shape the Protective Posture

On February 22, two Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach County deputy shot and killed a man in his early 20s who entered Mar-a-Lago’s secure perimeter near the north gate carrying a shotgun and a fuel can while Trump was at the White House. Six days later, the opening Epic Fury strikes killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. On October 23, Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton warned Secretary of State Marco Rubio in an unclassified memo, first reported by Axios, that Iranian plots against U.S. officials had reached advanced stages. The same day, Trump said the United States could launch another, smaller round of Epic Fury if no deal is reached.

The airspace has also proven porous. Since October 2025, the FAA has enforced a year-round temporary flight restriction (TFR) barring aircraft and drones within 1 nautical mile of Mar-a-Lago below 2,000 feet. As of early October, NORAD had intercepted more than 60 aircraft near the estate since January 2025. The latest came on October 24, when an F-16 flew a headbutt maneuver on a general aviation aircraft before the pilot made radio contact and left the zone.

Analysis: Combat air patrols and TFR enforcement are built to stop a crewed aircraft that can be warned, intercepted and escorted. They do little against a small drone launched from a boat on the lagoon or a one-way attack drone inbound from the Atlantic, a profile Iran and its proxies have used at scale. Pairing Stinger fire units with counter-drone kits that, in their certified configuration, jam drones or launch interceptors closes that gap with a layered point defense. The model has limits. A missile shot over a dense residential waterfront carries real collateral risk, pushing the first engagement onto electronic warfare and interceptors. And the Army is guarding the president with a missile it plans to replace: it seeks 11,000 Next Generation Short Range Interceptor missiles, with procurement starting in fiscal 2028.

The immediate test is this weekend’s presidential stay, followed by the November 3 midterm elections and a possible renewed strike campaign against Iran. Officials have not disclosed the number of fire units, the operating unit, the cost, the engagement authorities governing a shot over civilian Palm Beach, or whether the posture will become permanent. A challenge to the standing TFR by Palm Beach County, West Palm Beach and the Town of Palm Beach remains pending before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.
